Today TRIO is Europe’s largest local authority initiative for life-long learning for employment. It provides free access for any user to qualified learning material.
The course catalogue of 1,500 online courses represents TRIO’s “knowledge warehouse”. These courses are divided into 13 subject areas, including information technology, languages, public administration, and professional training. The objective of these courses is the acquisition of additional professional skills so as to increase the users competitiveness in the labor market.
In addition to personal access, services are deliverd through a network of physical assisted access points that are managed by territorial municipalities. Their aim is to enhance support services and guidance through the TRIO eLearning offerings and to support the qualification and social inclusion of individuals.
Furthermore, TRIO offers services and tools, available through dedicated web portals (WLG), to government agencies, accredited training organizations and private organizations in order to support or supplement their traditional training programs with online learning resources and service.
Since the beginning of 2009 the TRIO project has been managed by a consortium of companies led by eXact learning solutions, formerly Giunti Labs. The new course covers the development of innovative services relying on a new architecture that integrates open source applications.
An extended implementation of Moodle is at the core of the new TRIO platform, and is to be fully integrated with HarvestRoad Hive. The TRIO offering is complemented by informative services (KCMF), virtual classroom services (DimDim), collaborative social networking services for sharing knowledge and experiences (Elgg) and is preparing for course delivery to mobile devices.
The TRIO courses catalogue has been migrated to the SCORM standard and extended with 1,800 hours of new courses. Courses will also be reorganized
according to new semantic aggregations, such as series, thematic areas, and certified learning paths according to market, regional and institutional standards.
TRIO represents excellence in the world of eLearning, as it successfully addresses the continuous evolution of training needs. In 2006 the project received from the European Commission, the European Label for language teaching through innovation and effective teaching practices, and for contributing to the implementation of European policies through life-long learning.
Today, TRIO is Europe’s largest local authority initiative for life-long learning for employment, providing individuals, public and private organizations with products and eLearning services.
