Thales is currently restructuring its training programs for its customers throughout the world. Moving from a more traditional instructor led training (ILT) approach, where students come to the Netherlands for training, Thales is introducing different teaching methods, including distant self-study and eLearning options

By re-designing the training programs, Thales is looking forward to:

• Optimizing training processes by analyzing needs and designing courses with material that can be reused
• Managing the intellectual capital by improving process and content management
• Evaluating the effectiveness of programs by adding entry tests and learner progress monitoring
• Modernizing teaching techniques and delivery by introducing a blended learning approach
• Creating new business for Thales International Training Centre

In 2005 Thales International Training Centre started the development process of an LCMS/LMS environment. 

After extensive evaluation against a range of solutions and a trial period, the eXact LCMS platform was selected for the creation and management of the eLearning content. eXact LCMS is based on learning objects, XML and both SCORM and AICC specifications, which are all relevant features to the industrial sector.

Thales uses the eXact LCMS to create and manage the learning content related to their systems. In particular, the eXact LCMS platform allows subject matter experts to create, share and to reuse material easily, collaboratively and remotely in a highly effective way.

In addition, Thales has also found eXact LCMS to be a suitable, module-based learning management system (LMS) which allows for the delivery of eLearning content easily, because it also provides for the integrated management of user data, tracking and reports.

After developing the right teaching methods and organizing learning processes, Thales was able to:

• Develop interactive content to be used in blended learning and eLearning programs
• Enable the students to work according to their own schedule
• Give students full control of their learning programs
• Differentiate between target groups in a course program
• Measure the effectiveness of the new course program
• Be flexible in the delivery of “off-the-shelf-courseware”

• Re-use content for long term cost reduction
• Secure knowledge (Intellectual Capital Management)
• Develop new business with training services to suit the customers

Among the results of using the eXact LCMS were that attitude surveys and personal reviews completed by instructors, project managers and managers in general, which demonstrate that they were convinced of the need for change and that the LCMS/LMS played a crucial part in this process.

Thales has achieved more transparency in the teaching and learning process, along with a better view regarding achievements and results. In addition, importantly, Thales has standardized the procedures concerning the organization, teaching and learning processes, and use of content.
