Initially, Caja Madrid created eLearning content using a few preferred content producers. Each eLearning program was designed and created separately, which lead to the emerging need to increase the consistency of the final products developed by different providers.

All the different eLearning tools were maintained/updated by different companies, which made even minor error corrections time consuming. For this reason, Caja Madrid needed to streamline the overall process. Caja Madrid’s IT and Data Security department ensured the system's compliance with the strict security requirements typical of the banking and finance industry. The project, known as ‘Aula Virtual de Caja Madrid’, aims to make the most of and profit from the knowledge of Caja Madrid, its partners and collaborators. This is made possible through a special system used for development and delivery, which allows Caja Madrid to keep up with market changes and requirements.

The ‘Aula Virtual’ supports Web-based content development. Internal and external subject matter experts, as well as Learning Object (LO) providers have access for centralized content development.

The new solution included deployment of Flash LO models tailored to Caja Madrid’s needs and the implementation of a new learning content management architecture, including integrated LCMS and LMS (Plateau). To ensure the efficient reuse and quality of all content, all third-party content producers use eXact LCMS for their content production and management. Since LOs are then managed on the same LCMS and labelled with the same metadata schema, the whole process becomes more efficient in terms of both content reuse and updating.

The eXact LCMS solution allows Caja Madrid to organize, according to industry standards, all its learning content into one single content management system and digital repository. Most importantly, the legacy content of a huge number of instructor-led courses is being transferred into the system and tagged with a SCORM-based metadata and taxonomies framework. The same framework is also applied to all eLearning content.

In February 2009, Caja Madrid adopted the SCORM 2004 standard for all its learning materials and recently began insisting that all those providing its learning materials did so with eXact Packager software, compliant with SCORM 2004.

For the initial results, time-to-market for eLearning content was reduced, as follows:

• Content development time was reduced by 20 %
• Project management time was reduced by 30 %
• Content publishing time was reduced by 40 %
